SOS project approved by SDTC

With the support of Sustainable Development Technology Canada (SDTC), EcoSmart and its partners will develop the “SOS” (or SCM Otimization System).
SOS is a computer system that will allow developers, architects, engineers, contractors and material suppliers to optimize the use of supplementary cementing materials (SCMs) by simulating the effects of varying these materials on construction projects.

By determining optimal SCM levels, the system will reduce costs along with emissions of greenhouse gases by directly reducing the amount of Portland cement required for construction projects. The system will gather scientific and technical knowledge, experience and intellectual property on SCMs and make it available to industry through a continuously updated, computer-based system.

Supplementary Cementing Materials (SCM) Optimization System

Context

There is an increasing awareness amongst building professionals and officials that the use of higher levels of supplementary cementing materials (SCMs) in concrete can bring substantial benefits in terms of performance, cost, and constructability in addition to dramatic improvements to sustainability and the greenhouse gas (GHG) signature of concrete construction. However, there is also concern about potential pitfalls, such as lower setting time, longer curing requirements, or the potential for SCMs to introduce harmful chemicals into the concrete.
