SOS Greener Concrete UAE Workshop Invitation

You are cordially invited to EcoSmart™s free workshop “Toward Better and Greener Concrete”. This industry consultation event is for future users of the “SOS” software an online tool currently in development that will assist those involved in concrete construction projects such as architects engineers contractors and suppliers. Your input and participation in this workshop are vitally welcome and important. It is hoped you or a representative of your organization will be able to attend one of the workshops taking place in the United Arab Emirates. SOS Greener Concrete Canadian Workshop presentation

David Barrie and Roy Sage of EcoSmart provide an overview of supplementary cementing materials the links between cement and climate change and EcoSmart s SOS software development project. The SOS – or Supplementary Cementing Materials Optimization System – is in development until early 2011. This presentation was given to attendees of the SOS User Consultation Workshop held in select cities across Canada in December 2008 & February 2009 -cities included Vancouver Calgary Edmonton Winnipeg Toronto Ottawa Montreal and Halifax- . After the presentation participants were then engaged in discussion for feedback to assist in the development of the SOS to ensure it is a tool that will respond to the needs of the construction & design industry.

Transfer High Volume Supplementary Cementing Material (HVSCM) Technology to China.

The objective is to provide an enabling environment for the development, diffusion, deployment, and transfer of a cost-effective, cleaner, and more efficient alternative to cement.
It is based on an existing technology, complements current efforts of the China cement industry, and engages construction industry main stakeholders, research institutions, governmental, and non-governmental organizations.

Canada, which has emerged as a world-leader in the use of High Volume SCM concrete, is prepared to share its experience and knowledge and exchange information with other Asia Pacific Partnership (APP)  countries in an effort to support the common goal of developing and implementing clean development strategies and efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
This initiative, in helping to reduce the overall GHG intensity of cementing material by addressing practical barriers, contributes to the APP mission and objectives. It is proposed to share Canadian SCM expertise with Chinese partners and lay the groundwork for extension and transfer of related Canadian technologies and knowledge such as the SOS program.

SOS System User Consultation: Canadian Workshop Series Feb 3-9, 2009

The SOS project is underway and the software is at the system design stage. A key part of the software development is consulting with various professional groups and individuals to get input into what the tool should do.

Throughout December 2008 and February 2009 consultation workshops were held across Canada with potential users of SOS, including architects, engineers, developers, contractors and concrete & cement suppliers. These interactive events were held to ensure the SOS tool will respond to the needs of the construction & design industry.

Half day industry consultation workshops were held in Vancouver, Halifax, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Winnipeg, Calgary and Edmonton. Participants learned about the SOS project and provided feedback on how they thought it could be relevant to their work. This information is being incorporated into the development of the software to ensure SOS is a tool that will be beneficial to its users once it is released in early 2011.

Further consultation workshops will also take place in the UAE (March 16 & 18, 2009) and in Saskatchewan in late April, 2009.
