Early Strength Properties: HVFA Concrete Mixes for High-Rise Construction: Preliminary Report

Levelton conducted a laboratory trial mix program for the Bayview high rise feasibility study to evaluate the potential disadvantages in using high volume fly ash concrete in high rise construction. The main concerns were delayed stripping time and the need for additional shoring.

This report presents the results of that program. The intent was to improve HVFA mix performance by one of two systems:

  • addition of accelerating admixtures;
  • reduction of the water : cement ratio by the use of superplasticizers.

The program used common industry concrete mix design for two critical high-rise schedule elements – columns and slabs. Mixes were tested for early age properties at both Summer and Winter temperature conditions.
